Second Symposium of Romanian Spirituality, Concordia University, Montreal

On Saturday, February 7, 2009, the second edition of the Symposium of Romanian Spirituality organized by the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese in the Americas took place at the Concordia University in Montreal. This year the event was co-sponsored by the Department of Theological Studies at Concordia University. Five speakers presented papers on the theme The Cappadocians: Theology and Spirituality for the 21st century:

   - Dr. Charles Kannengiesser (Professor emeritus, Notre Dame University, US; Adjunct Professor of Historical Theology and Research Fellow at Concordia), "Gospel revelation in Cappadocia"
  - Dr. Pamela Bright (Professor of Historical Theology, Concordia), "Paradox and participation: a Christmas sermon of Gregory of Nazianzus"
  - Dr. Lucian Turcescu (Associate Professor of Historical Theology, Concordia), "Blessed Are the Peacemakers, for They Will Be Called Sons of God: Images of Salvation in St. Gregory of Nyssa"
  - Dr. Dragos Giulea (PhD in Philosophy, University of Bucharest, Romania and doctoral candidate in Theology at Marquette University, Milwaukee, US), "The paschal Christ of the Cappadocian fathers"
  - Dr. Bogdan Bucur (Assistant Professor of Early Christianity, Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, US) "From Vision to Exegesis and Theology: observations about an unexpected icon of St. Gregory Nazianzen"

Archbishop Nicolae and Bishop Ioan Casian addressed words of welcome to the attendance. An interesting discussion followed the presentations. According to the decision of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church, the Symposium considered the generic theme of the Year 2009 as dedicated to St Basil the Great, Archbishop of Caesarea Cappadocia († 379) and of the other Cappadocian Saints.
