Biography

His Eminence

Archbishop Nicolae

His Eminence Nicolae Condrea was born in Constanţa, Romania on April 15, 1967, the son of the late Nicolae and Victoria Condrea.

Following the call he felt for the priesthood and the monastic life he was admitted to the Andrei Şaguna Faculty of Theology in Sibiu. He successfully completed his four years of course work. He also successfully defended his thesis for the Licentiate in Theology entitled: "The Eucharistic Theology of Metropolitan John Zizioulas."

From 1993 through 1994, after he had passed the admission exams for the doctoral program at the very same Faculty, he began his doctoral course work under the direction of Rev. Prof. Dr. Ilie Moldovan in the area of Moral Theology. During this period, from 1992-1994, he was also a professor of religion in Bucureşti, where he had relocated shortly before completing his Licentiate degree.

In 1994 he received a scholarship to study at the Faculty of Theology of the Marc Bloch University in Strasbourg, where he receive a Diploma from the D.E.A. (intensive study) program. He continued his doctoral studies at the Marc Bloch University where, on 10 November 2001, he received the degree of Doctor in Theology. The title of his thesis is: "Some Problems of Psychology in Evagrios of Pontus."

While studying in Strasbourg, in order to combine theory with practical experience, study with priestly service, he decided to enter the ranks of the clergy and was ordained in the spring of 1997 to the deaconate and then to the priesthood by His Eminence Metropolitan Serafim of Germany and Central Europe. With his blessing he founded and served the parish of the Lord's Nativity in Stttgart. His missionary activity during this period among the Romanian Orthodox faithful in the greater Stttgart area helped him to combine the Lord's service with service to people.

After having received his doctoral degree, then Fr. Nicolae returned to Romania and, on 18 December 2001, took monastic vows at the Monastery of Radu Vodă in Bucureşti. He has been serving since then, and up until his arrival here in North America, as Patriarchal Secretary.

In a Special Electoral Congress of the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese in America and Canada held on 9 March 2002 at the Holy Trinity parish in Troy, Michigan, the clergy and lay delegates gathered there elected Fr. Nicolae Condrea to the vacant Archiepiscopal throne of the Archdiocese. The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church voted unanimously to confirm this election in its session of 13 March 2002 and at the same time according Fr. Nicolae with the rank of Archimandrite. It was also decided by the Electoral Congress that the ordination and installation of Archbishop-elect Nicolae would be held in conjunction with the Annual Archdiocesan Congress hosted by the St. John the Baptist parish in Montral.

The presence of His Beatitude Patriarch Teoctist and the other venerable hierarchs, members of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church who constitute the official delegation to the ordination, together with the hierarchs representing the other sister Orthodox Churches on the North American continent, highlights the importance of this historic event. This marks the beginning of a new and hopeful period in the life of the Archdiocese and for the Romanian Orthodox faithful of North American.
